E3 2012 Day 1: Ubisoft Press Conference
Tue 5th Jun 2012 - 7:33pm
E3 has begun at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, with Ubisoft set to announce some of the biggest games at the convention. There has already been huge software and game announcements set to hit the shelves in the upcoming year. This post will have a detailed breakdown on the major announcements as well as some opinions from Grant 'Ava' Hill and Kathryn 'theWarrden' Notley of upcoming games and software from Ubisoft.
Just Dance 4:
Ubisoft open the show with an incredible laser performance, lots of cheerleaders and a live performance from rapper Flo Rida. Just Dance 4 will be on the Wii U, the new console from Nintendo, while the game itself is very reminiscent of previous versions. With new songs and 100% more Flo Rida, the use of the Wii U and the release date of October 9th shows it is coming very, very soon.
dAva: I can't dance, I have 2 left feet but I am extremely excited about the Wii U, I hope it has the graphic capability to keep up with next gen consoles, if this game comes free with my Wii U on launch I will for sure give Flo Rida a run for his money.
theWarrden: Dance games seem to be a modern house party staple, its not hard to see why. You get in your comfort zone, have a few sausage rolls, beverage of your choice then hit Just Dance (so say Ubisoft). When you are one of the most popular dance genre games you need to keep it fresh and Just Dance 4 seems to be just that.
Far Cry 3:
The trailer for this game started with an incredibly raunchy sex scene, followed by what seems to be a tribal ritual. Some plot is revealed and we find out that Vaas has annoyed us and we want revenge. The gameplay itself is similar to previous Far Cry games, it is visually phenomenal, with fluid combat using weaponry from a Bow all the way to a fully Automatic Gun. The game itself is set on more than 1 island, 4 in fact and parachuting, boat control and swimming are all methods of transport between we are able to see. This sequel will be a huge release for Ubisoft and the crowd show that with their cheers.
dAva: It's too pretty, the last Far Cry release was a really solid title that I enjoyed and I must say I am extremely excited about this. The story seemed strong, a wide array of weapons and transport methods and 4 islands! Really interesting title.
theWarrden: 99% freaked out and a little scared, that is me interested!
The big, nostalgic title for the Wii U, this game brings back classic platforming with many, many twists. To start with the players perspective we have is from a brand new playable character, Murphy. He flies around above Rayman and is controlled using the Wii U touch pad to hit switches, tackle floating enemies, move platforms and generally assist Rayman as he moves with incredible pace through the levels. This game boasts having up to 5 people playing at the same time though just 3 at a time are shown during the demo. The second level demo'd shows all 3 characters moving at incredible pace through a typical Rayman level and visually this game is fantastic, there is an incredible amount going on as each character takes up different roles to progress through the level and it is certainly reminiscent of earlier Rayman titles.
dAva: This looks like incredible amounts of fun, I'm a huge fan of all Nintendo party games and they do some amazing family co-op games, this has one upped all of them and added a whole new dimension of fun to it. I cannot wait for the Wii U, this game alone gives affirmation that the Wii U is going to be amazing fun.
theWarrden: Rayman gets a real 21st century update. You have traditional platform style then you get a new dimension which looks more familiar to what we are used to now a days. This concept I like but in terms of the Wii U I'm going use my right to remain silent on that one.
Assassins Creed 3:
The game everyone wanted to see, Assassins Creed 3 had by far the longest trailer so far, set in colonial America the trailer starts on the battlefield as our new Assassins beats us British back, really hard, with a Tomohawk while George Washington looks on extremely unamused. We are told by exective producer Francois that the American Revolution was a turning point in history and we are thrown into a gameplay trailer. Set in a very snowy New England in 1776 our new hero is controlled as he climbs trees and with incredible grace and fluidity, a step up even from previous Assassin Creed games leaps from tree to tree, climbs higher and then assassinates a deer for it's meat as part of a quest. We are shown a questing hub before immediately thrown into real action as we are given a quest to assault a fort nearby. There is some incredibly platforming, climbing stone walls, sliding down snowy paths and travelling through the fort quickly and convincingly despatching enemies while given the objective to assassinate the leader. The final moments end with a huge leap from the high ground and the leader of this Red Coat fort being hit so hard, he certainly won't be getting up.
Francois goes on to explain that we will be fighting for no one in particular in the war and that The Templar will always be the enemy, he says the game spans 3 years and we are shown a short trailer of seasons changing and new environments. The presentation ends with the largest applause of the convention. This release is set to be huge.
dAva: I had nerd chills throughout this trailer, the gameplay itself is phenomenal, new weapons and abilities, a tomahawk! and some amazing killing blows. They've really upped the fluidity, but made it much more possible to go on an all out assault and just destroy everyone with pure speed instead of stealth. A game worth pre-ordering.
theWarrden: This was an epic trailer and I know more than a few gamers that will be looking forward to guiding the cirque du soleil style character around times gone past. I love emersive games and this is set in a time period that tweeks my interest so I will most definitely be in the digital queue for this game.
This next trailer from the creators of the incredibly successful eSport Trackmania was played out differently, first of all there was an introduction which touched on the overwhelming growth of eSports, then a 3v3 tournament was played out live on stage casted by Stephanie Harvey and Joe Miller, the teams were Boys vs Girls with 3 professional CS champions on the girls team and a 12 time world champion CS player, a WoW veteran and another pro FPS player on the guys team. The mode played was elite, in which 1 person from either team took on all 3 of the opposition, the advantage was giving to even it up in the form of a railgun, which is a 1 shot kill against the other team which onl had RPG's. The gameplay was very early alpha, with only one map available but it was fast paced, tense and enjoyable to watch and a segment on eSports can only do well.
dAva: eSports is a huge part of what I do so this felt really positive, the coverage will make the game a success and only do well for the industry, the game itself looks really fun and fast, with good weapon and game mode choice, this will definitely be the next big FPS eSport in my opinion.
theWarrden: eSports gets on the stage at E3 hurray! Shootmania is the upcoming FPS my Twitter won't be quiet about, I'm so excited to try this as soon as possible! On stage Joe_Miller and MissHarvey were representing in a briliant fashion. Good to see, hopefully more eSports will be seen at E3 in the future too!
Watch Dogs is Ubisoft's brand new IP, in which you play a character with control of the city and use the city itself as your weapon, the gameplay trailer has you hacking and using different gadgets and tactics to lure out a victim. The game itself is a 3rd person shooter with some melee combat tied in and a free roaming map similar to Grand Theft Auto's style. The game also has multiplayer elements, but very little was revealed about that. Visually it seemed very dark and the plot itself echoes that from what was portrayed in the trailer, definitely a game to watch.
dAva: Too little was given away in this trailer, I would love to see if there is more gunplay, or mainly hacking based. Also any signs of vehicle control would have been cool, the game seems amazingly interesting though and this definitely did a good job of teasing me.
theWarrden: No in-depth details to speak of but I like the principal of having more control over the environment. Lots of gadget toys is always a nice bonus. Looking forward to hearing more about this game before my brain goes into imagination overload.
dAva: Personally Rayman stands out to me, I love the Wii U's concept and this game really takes it to the level it should be at, Assassins Creed 3 looks incredible and fluid, I will definitely pick that up, then Far Cry takes a close 3rd as visually it was just spectacular.
theWarrden: Give me Shootmania, more Shootmania, Assassins Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 then I will be a happy gamer. A beady eye will be kept on Watch Dogs hopefully we shall see a WTF from Cynical Brit on it!
