E3 2012 Day 1: EA Press ConferenceTue 5th Jun 2012 - 10:56pm Category: Team Dignitas
E3 has begun at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, EA have been set to make some huge announcements regarding future FPS games from their incredibly successful back catalogue. This post will have a detailed breakdown on the major announcements as well as some opinions from Grant 'Ava' Hill and Kathryn 'theWarrden' Notley of upcoming games and software from Electronic Arts.
Dead Space 3:
A secret not particularly well kept, EA have officially announced the sequel to the horror-3rd person shooter Dead Space 3. A few changes have been made, firstly co-op has been added and a new character, John Carver has been introduced to travel with our hero, Isaac. The newest game in the series is set entirely on a frozen tundra planet, with gigantic enemies that could be ripped from a Gears Of War title, this game has the same visual style of previous titles with horror taking the foreground. Also the introduction of human enemies, making a change from the typical big scary monsters that most definitely go bump in the night.
dAva: These games scare the life out of me, it's about the experience and the atmosphere the games create and this trailer shows that Dead Space are back and willing to make me not sleep again. Co-op will be great fun and I cannot wait to play this game!
theWarrden: Games that are intended to make me feel on edge through atmosphere, love them! They just have to make me breathless at the end of a huge fight so this may just fit that bill looking at the trailer. Is the music atmospheric? Check. Lots of action & being nearly swallowed by huge monsters? Check. On list to consider purchasing? Check.
Battlefield 3 Premium:
An announcement was made by both EA and Dice about the future of Battlefield, to the dismay of many it was not a sequel but rather premium content. For $50 you activate the premium content which gives 5 new 'expansion packs' consisting of maps, customization options and more. Those that purchase Battlefield 3 Premium will be able to score 2 weeks early access to all expansions, and one expansion for free on top of this. New game modes, assignments and much more is said, though they do not reiterate on what 'much more' is.
dAva: Unfortunately I do not agree with this, $50 is the price of a new game and to play the same game in a different place isn't worth that amount of money for me, but I am not a hardcore Battlefield fan. The game itself though is incredibly successful and this business venture will work out for the best I imagine, would have liked a sequel though to rival the new Call of Duty.
theWarrden: Premium content is not something which tends to go down all that well with avid gamers at the moment. My rule of thumb is if the 'content' doesn't give you a heavy advantage in the game that others that do not have the premium get then it is ok and for the most part this is only cosmetic and expansions, which they claim will be cheaper. If it saves the Battlefield consumer money then its ok with me, if you are a hardcore Battlefield gamer and cannot resist, dig in!
Need for Speed Most Wanted:
The newest of the Need For Speed remakes is Most Wanted which not only puts you against other racers but also the police, letting you take the role of both the law breaking escapee but also the police officer, giving chase to the speeding criminals. The gameplay shown features a yellow Porsche attempting to escape the police at incredible speeds. As with every other announcement, the game has amazing visual effects and incredible speed. The chase was genuinely tense and the catastrophic crash in which the criminal nearly escaped caused a gasp. Also destructible surroundings in which shortcuts can be taken through thin walls are present, a new feature that will really mix up the escaping simulation. Just don't try this at home.
dAva: I really enjoyed the original Most Wanted, they are enjoyable games to drop in and out of, whether you like serious racers or not. I love that Prince Harry and Prince William were in the score boards as well, I really hope it was actually them. A top pick for me!
theWarrden: Another racer from EA for us to enjoy when boredom or party fever sets in. The new feature is indeed going to give the gamers something new to do. Also a role to play for whatever mood you happen to be in, one of my Sale purchases thats for sure.
The top in graphical prowess and EA waste no time announcing the next in the lineage of Crysis. The new CryEngine is said to 'push the limits of gaming' and if any game can do it, it is Crysis. From the trailer the game looks visually incredible, with textures so detailed they could be taken from a photograph, gameplay wise there are no huge new elements given away, but the normal suit options to turn invisible are available and the shooting mechanics are as solid as ever. Crysis is definitely a graphical experience and if the story is strong, this game is sure to make a huge hit.
dAva: Unfortunately, Crysis 2 was a let down for me, it's story left much to be desired. The game itself though was just beautiful and if EA believe Crysis 3 will top that I am already excited to see the result, I just hope they realise big bangs and pretty trees are not enough to make a game perfect.
theWarrden: Crysis as a series is more popular for me in a sense of it being a benchmark for graphics that can destroy hardware. This game appears to be no different and hopefully there is something beneath the amazing graphics in the form of good gameplay and a story.
dAva: EA had a great conference, I am definitely excited for Dead Space 3, that game is going to be great to play online with my brother, being extremely scared. Crysis will as always be a pleasure to look at and Need for Speed are games I really enjoy just to mess about with friends on. My one concern is of course Battlefield but maybe a hardcore Battlefield player will enjoy this announcement. Thank you overall to EA though!
theWarrden: Alot of sequels from EA and not a huge favourite at the moment. However some promising games from here in particular Dead Space 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, SimCity and EA Sports UFC are on my list.
